ACUC RELOADED

After an amazing first edition in 2019, just when we thought this couldn’t get any better, Adventure Clean Up Challenge 2020 edition blew our minds (and hearts!) up! More than 30 teams signed up to participate, and although only 13 could make it to the challenge - doubling the size of the competition vs. 2019 -, each one of the participating teams proved totally worthy.

We were very proud to see an increase in the disciplines involved, with 2 teams of swimmers, a touch rugby with hiking and kayaking skills, climbers, rock scramblers, avid hikers and snorkelers, campers… you name it!

Short and sweet, the 2020 ACUC took place over a 3 days weekend (October 24th-26th) followed by 2 weeks of community engagement activities.

Throughout the challenge, 13 remote areas across HK Island, Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay were cleaned up, 1.728 large bags of trash were collected and properly disposed of - which for most of the teams meant carrying the bags uphill, with ropes and bamboo sticks! -.

Also, 59 barrels, 42 ghost nets, 10 fridges, 20 chairs, boat parts, 42 plastic buckets, 8 tanks, 201 large pieces of styrofoam, 2 car doors and 18 boat buoys were removed from these remote coastal areas and properly disposed of.

More than 100 community engagement actions (including social media) were registered, some of which comprised of recycling days in the teams’ residential areas, engagement with schools, district councillors, and private/NGO entities (Jockey Club, Decathlon, WWF, KPMG and more) doing talks and workshops.

The winning team - Bottle Bob Squad from ISF School - was recognised for its dedication (the team camped at their site for 3 days, conducting a zero waste, vegetarian lifestyle), its outreach (they involved the whole of the ISF School including students, their families and staff) and their commitment to safety.
